Following Lesa Jordan’s idea, Paul applied for a £1000 grant from Pets at Home and was successful. The Head Office arranged for two members of the Cheltenham Branch to come here and present the cheque. The two young ladies, Mary and Charlotte were very professional and soon made friends with some of the macaws. Then came another dreaded photographer also asking to do the impossible, he wanted one of the macaws to hold the cheque in his/her beak. We wrote out a dummy cheque and several times one of the birds would hold it, however the photographer missed all the good shots whilst fiddling with his flash and camera. This resulted in a very fed up, bitten, Paul and myself and several cheesed off and angry macaws. After all this there was a tiny piece in the local newspaper with a picture that didn’t flatter Mary and Charlotte or give Pets at Home the publicity it deserved.
